UHD Vs HDR- TV Buying Guide

You could have heard about the latest buzzwords “UHD” and “HDR”. If you’re planning on buying a new HDTV or upgrading your current one, you might be wondering what they mean and how they’re related. To find out, read on to learn more.

I also have the same problem when I got my first 4K TV a year ago. While UHD stands for Ultra High Definition, HDR stands for High-Dynamic Range. But then why these letters are close together? Is there any relationship? A lot of people think that UHD and HDR are two different technologies, but this is wrong. Though they look similar, they are actually the same technology and there is no relationship between them.

What is UHD?

You may have also heard about 4K UHD. What is 4K UHD? Does it matter? And why should you care?

The 4K standard is 4096×2160 pixels — hence 4,096 (4K), which is four times more than 1080p HD. However, this isn’t what manufacturers are using for their TVs — instead, they’re using 3840×2160, which gives a total of 8,294,400 pixels and is therefore known as “Ultra High Definition” or UHD.

In other words, 4K refers to the horizontal pixel count. You may have also seen this referred to as 2160p or Ultra High Definition (UHD). The vertical pixel count doesn’t matter as much because most videos are in a 16:9 aspect ratio, so you can just double the horizontal pixel count.

Some non-techie people may think that going from HD to 4K means doubling the picture quality, but that doesn’t quite take into account all the factors involved. That said, 4K does deliver a noticeable increase in picture quality over HD, especially when viewing on larger screens like 55 inches and above.

The main benefit of UHD is picture quality, though there are other improvements as well. One advantage is that if you’re watching 4K programming, it will look great on your screen no matter how close you are to it. Another benefit of higher resolution is an increased color gamut. A wider range of colors means more natural images, with less banding and posterization in gradients and skies.

What is HDR?

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and refers to the range of tones from bright to dark in an image. The technology is designed to display a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels which results in more realistic and life-like pictures. Think of it as the difference between viewing an image with a very low dynamic range versus a very high one. The former will appear faded and washed out while the latter appears rich with detail.

HDR content comes in many forms, such as videos and games, and it’s up to the device to capture and display it correctly. In general, at least 4K resolution is required to view HDR content so if you’re using a 1080p TV or monitor, then you won’t be able to enjoy it in its full glory.

What exactly HDR does ?

The most important thing HDR does is improve the contrast ratio of an image. This means that there are more possible variations of brightness levels compared to SDR.

To understand what HDR means, you need to know about Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) first. SDR is the display technology we’ve been using up until now. It refers to how bright or dark images on the screen can be, and how many levels of brightness are between these extremes. With SDR, you have just 16 levels of brightness to work with while HDR gives you over 64 times more at 1,000 nits and beyond

What is HDR 10 ?

Now that you know what HDR is, let’s take a look at the HDR format that’s most widely supported.

HDR10 is the most common form of HDR on TV shows and movies. It’s an open standard that was developed by Samsung, Panasonic, and 20th Century Fox (and later joined by Microsoft and Warner Bros.). The majority of HDR TVs and content supports HDR10.

HDR10 uses 10-bit color depth which can produce 1.07 billion colors. It also uses “Static Metadata” which means it sends color information to the TV only once at the beginning of the movie or TV show.

However, some experts argue that this type of metadata is too limited when it comes to producing accurate colors and supporting multiple frames per second for smooth motion. So another format came onto the market such as Dolby Vision.

What is Dolby Vision ?

Dolby Vision is a new HDR (high dynamic range) format from Dolby. Like HDR10, Dolby Vision can display a much larger range of luminosity than standard monitors and TVs. If you’re not sure what that means, that’s okay. The important thing to know is this: Dolby Vision will make your TV look better than ever before.

The difference between Dolby Vision and HDR10 is the way content creators encode their shows and movies. With HDR10, content creators use a static metadata system — in other words, they apply one layer of additional information across the whole film. Dolby Vision uses dynamic metadata, meaning each scene can have different instructions for brightness or color. For example, a dark scene could be much darker than it would be on an HD or standard 4K TV — but still within the capabilities of an HDR-ready TV.

Conclusion: HDR is more important than UHD but both are important.

UHD is just a resolution. It has its advantages but if you’re willing to go with a lower resolution, it’s not a necessity.

HDR, on the other hand, offers a much bigger difference in picture quality and can be appreciated even at lower resolutions.

In the end, both are important, but HDR is more important than 4K.

So, in conclusion, to me HDR is far more important than UHD. It’s a more noticeable improvement and more likely to change your viewing experience for the better. Having said that, I’m not going to tell you that you shouldn’t bother with UHD.

The good news is that you don’t have to choose between them. Both are already available on most new TVs and both will be for years to come. If I were buying a TV today, I’d get one that offers both — and I’ve been doing just that for months now.
